Mile High Teachers

In 2005, Mayor Hickenlooper wanted to start a new tradition of honoring Denver Public School teachers. 256 teachers were honored as the inaugural Mile High Teachers in a city-wide ceremony with the Mayor, City Council, Superintendent and School Board. For the 2006 celebration, an additional 176 teachers were honored.

Each principal is encouraged to put together a small team of teachers, parents, and students to select 1-3 teachers to be honored, depending on the size of the school, using the following criteria:
1. The teacher(s) goes above and beyond in instruction by bringing in projects/activities to enhance and bring to life the curriculum

2. The teacher(s) is creative in engaging students and delivering instruction

3. The teacher(s) works well with colleagues in sharing ideas for instruction/curriculum

Schools with less than 600 students are able to select 1 teacher.

Schools with 601 – 1000 students are able to select 2 teachers.

Schools with more than 1000 students are able to select 3 teachers.
